Saturday, August 20th was a perfect day for a grueling endurance test for those seeking opportunities to get wet and feel cold and miserable. Signet’s owner Eugene Yashin and his daughter Katya put on their wetsuits and took on the “Escape from the Rock” duathlon.
The course combines a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz to mainland San Francisco with a 7-mile run to Fort Point and back to Aquatic Park. Eugene and Katya went halves on the glory and handled the aquatic part of the course.
As tourists lazily ferried to Alcatraz, the Yashins were battling the forces of nature in brutally cold water swimming away from the island. Even though they hadn’t trained much for the competition, both showed impressive results. Katya took an hour and 4 minutes to finish the swim, and Eugene set his foot on the dry ground one hour and 16 minutes after the race started.
‘This was an experience of a lifetime,’ — shares his impressions about the race Eugene Yashin, ‘One thing I learned from this — a human has no limit, neither physically nor mentally. Training is all it takes to achieve whatever you want to achieve.’
